Weill Cornell Medicine

Baran was born in Istanbul, Turkiye where he was exposed to pharmaceutical research early in life through his family members including his mother, uncle and aunts, who were faculty members at Istanbul and Marmara Universities. Baran moved to the United States soon after graduating Lycée Français Saint Benoît. It didn’t take long for him to discover his family’s shared interest in biomedical research. He completed his doctorate studies at the University of California San Francisco where he focused on the hypothalamic regulation of appetite in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center. He complemented his graduate training with a postdoctoral fellowship focused on the peripheral control of lipid and glucose homeostasis at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston, Massachusetts. Within three years, he rose to the ranks of Instructor in Medicine at HMS and Investigator at BWH. In 2016, he was recruited to Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) in New York, NY as an Assistant Professor where he established his independent research laboratory within Belfer Research Building. He is also a Faculty Member in Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medicine where he serves as the Director of the Biochemistry Course. Baran has been the recipient of several awards and is currently supported by funds from WCMC and the National Institutes of Health. He is a Review Board Member for the American Association for the Studies of Liver Disease (AASLD), Danish Diabetes Association (DDA) and Hepatology. Outside of the lab, Baran is a family man who loves coaching his 4 kids in hockey, soccer and tennis
